Down syndrome children

Down syndrome is one of the most common congenital syndromes. It is the most prevalent chromosomal disorder, and also the most frequently recognized cause of intellectual disability.

Although the risk of having a child with Down syndrome increases with maternal age, a baby with Down syndrome can be born to a mother of any age. The risk is about 1 in 2000 at 20 years and 1 in 45 at 45 years of age. Most babies with Down syndrome are born to mothers under 35.

Most parents of babies with Down syndrome know the diagnosis within hours or days of the birth and the next weeks and months are a period of considerable emotional distress and adjustment.
The adjustment period will be helped by the availability of accurate information on Down syndrome and the sources of local support such as parent groups and Down syndrome Associations.

There are more differences between children with Down syndrome that there are similarities. The child will have many individual characteristics inherited from his parents. He may look like his mother, his father, a grandfather or an aunt.

In the first year of life, social development (smiling, cooing, babbling and socializing) is usually only slightly delayed and in the first moths of life babies and early communications skills.
