Diet for pregnant women

*Five servings of fresh fruits and vegetables (including at least one serving of a dark orange vegetable, two servings of dark green leafy vegetables, and one serving of citrus fruit)

A pregnant woman needs seven or more 4 oz serving daily of fruit or vegetables that are rich in vitamin C and A. It is also important to note that the only safe way to get enough vitamin A is by eating fruits or vegetables high in vitamin A.

*Six servings of enriched, whole-grain breads and cereals. Three servings of nonfat or low-fat milk or milk products

Combining grain and beans, as in bean burrito or by eating bean soup with bread provides complete protein. Two extra glasses of milk also supply the extra calcium, protein and vitamin D required during pregnancy.

Cereal, beans, spinach, kale, broccoli, and peanuts are also rich in folate. Folate is B vitamin that helps prevent neural tube defects in the developing fetus.

*Two to three servings of extra-lean meats, chicken without the skin, fish, or cooked dried beans and peas

*Eight glasses of water

Encourage pregnant women to eat small, frequent meals, avoid fatty foods and drink plenty of liquid. Some women may need to avoid highly spices and very rich foods.
